Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series - the OHSAS 18001
"Specification" and the accompanying OHSAS 18002, Guidelines for the
Implementation of OHSAS 18001, have been developed in response to
customer demand for a recognizable occupational health and safety
management system standard against which their management systems can be
assessed and certified.
OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety) is very similar to
14001, written by some of the same people who wrote ISO 14001.
It has not yet, however, been adopted by ISO. Will it ever
be?.....not sure, but it doesn't have to be. You can still have your
company "certified" by a Registrar that it meets the OHSAS 18001
standard.
Insurance companies are beginning to take notice.
It is a Risk Reduction/Risk Management program. Will your
insurance company give consideration to your company for implementing
18001? ..... call them, they may.
Free Consultation for
your planning needs..........budgeting, proposal
preparation, basic introduction to what OHSAS 18001 entails,
basic implementation process, tie-in's with ISO 9001 and 14001.

OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System Background |
Poague & Associates Background |
Occupational Health & Safety Compliance is a legal requirement.
Remember OSHA and 29 CFR 1910. Inspectors from federal and state can visit you at any time, without notice. An effective
Health & Safety Management System is a must. By following the OHSAS 18001 "Standard", you will gain control of your
Health & Safety Issues by using a method that has been proven effective by
major corporations world wide. Companies like Owens Corning and Alcan have
implemented and certified to OHSAS 18001.
There is a
"Family of OHSAS 18001 Documents", but
the main document to which Certification is granted is OHSAS 18001.
What will I gain by "doing" OHSAS 18001?
Corporate Governance is on the top of everyone's
list. Taking steps to protect the stock/stake holders has become a part of
almost all organizations strategic plan. A company executive who doesn't, is
at personal and professional risk.
Reducing a company's exposure to risk. Accidents
happen. With healthcare costs weighing on the bottom line of a company, any
reduction in accidents, workers compensation claims provides not only a
tremendous culture benefit, but also a financial benefit.
All managers will try to avoid accidents or compliance infringements that could
cost the company a fine. But world class managers will agree that doing only
just enough to keep the company out of trouble with government inspectors is a
rather weak and reactive approach to business in today's increasingly
litigious world.
World Class companies use proven systems. The OHSAS 18001 standards are practical tools for the manager who is not satisfied with mere compliance with legislation – which may be perceived as a cost of doing business. They're for the proactive manager with the breadth of vision to understand that implementing a strategic approach can bring return on investment in environment-related measures.
Implementing an OHSAS 18001 system will give you far more than just confidence that you are complying with the law. The
OHSAS 18001 approach drives you to take a hard look at all areas where your business has
health and safety risks.
